San Bernardino County, CA

Name of the Project

San Bernardino County, CA State of California 2,300 miles roadway pavement condition survey and computerized management system

Description

The ICON pavement maintenance management system was implemented to manage the condition survey information of all of the roadways in the diverse geographical topology of San Bernardino County, which includes mountains, desert, valleys, and densely populated urban areas.

The largest area-based County in the United States (20,052 square miles or 52,000 square KM), San Bernardino County maintains a 2,304 centerline-mile (3,800 KM) roadway network.

Additionally, this project involved the development of a handheld PDA data collection application to collect infrastructure condition data.

The principal user of the system at the county worked with our project staff to develop a hand held data collection program and quality control algorithms were developed within the ICON system to accept this data and calculate condition scores for processing.

This program creates a batch file that is directly imported into the ICON program through a function that provides a quality control filter to ensure data validity.

Additional ICON users have since adopted this technology to eliminate the need for a paper-driven data collection and data entry process.
